Running like Forrest

This was going to be quick session before going out for a run. According to the late/great Chip Reese though, if you're having a good session you don't bank your profits - you play it out to the end and try to extract every dollar possible.

During current Hold'em session you were dealt 369 hands and saw flop:
- 26 out of 50 times while in big blind (52%)
- 9 out of 51 times while in small blind (17%)
- 26 out of 268 times in other positions (9%)
- a total of 61 out of 369 (16%)
Pots won at showdown - 13 of 13 (100%)
Pots won without showdown - 17

Of course, the longer you run really well the closer you get to that inevitable brick wall.

"Look at me Ma, no hands! "

I was happy with my read in this hand. The player to my left that initially pushed I thought had a weak ace. The player that limp called I put on a lower pair.

This is the best winning run I've had though which occurred back in November:

During current Hold'em session you were dealt 218 hands and saw flop:
- 14 out of 28 times while in big blind (50%)

The art of decision making

I saw the documentary last night and thought it was fascinating. Some really interesting concepts regarding decision making even though it goes off on a tangent towards the end into precognition.

One highlight was where it discusses the reason for loss chasing which is a big hole in many peoples games. i.e. playing longer sessions to turn around a losing session and quitting profitable sessions too early.

Right read, wrong player, bad fold?

I've only seen a few rounds of the button but neither player has stood out to this point. The big overbet screams a made straight. I rule out an overpair due to there being no preflop raise. The smooth call was an even greater concern. Calling for most of his stack obviously also means a made hand?

So for one bet invested, do I want to play for both stacks or pull the ripcord? Or on such a draw heavy board with so many hand holdings (under set, 2 pair, flush draw, str draw etc etc) is this a spot to fold top set? If the players were deeper how does this affect the hand? Are you more or less likely to push?

(And yes, I folded quads...)

Undertow

The brilliance that is the band 'Tool'.

A little ditty about whether or not you choose to live in the 'matrix'..

Undertow

two times down

I've been struck dumb by your scent
speaks from deep beneath the endless water
twice as clear as heaven
twice as loud as reason
deep and rich like silt on a riverbed
just as neverending

currents mouth below me
opens up around me
suggests and beckons all while swallowing
surrounds and drowns and swept me away

but I'm so comfortable... so comfortable

shut up, shut up, shut up
shut up, you're saturating me
how can I let this bring me back to my knees?

third time in

I've been baptized by your scent
screams from deep beneath the cold black water
half as high as heaven
half as clear as reason
deep and black like silt on a riverbed
deep and neverending

currents mouth below me
opens up around me
suggests and beckons all while swallowing
surrounds and drowns and swept me away

but I'm so comfortable... too comfortable

shut up, shut up, shut up
shut up, you're saturating me
how can I let this happen?
why don't you kill me?
I am weak and numb and insignificant
how can I let this bring me back to my knees?

Eu-phor-i-a.. Eu-phor-i-a.. Eu-phor-i-a.. Eu-phor-i-a..

I'm back down
I'm in the undertow

I'm helpless and I'm awake
I'm in the undertow

Will I die beneath the undertow?
There doesn't seem no other way out of the undertow

Eu.... phor.... i.... a....

A glitch in the matrix

Two hands in a row at the same table.

What are the chances?

Get Shorty

After a discussion on Bastin's blog I stumbled across this brilliant post on combating shortstacks.

http://archives1.twoplustwo.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=12157664

In particular, the correct calling range is pretty shocking and I'm in that group that fold too much.

FG
------------------------- CUT

However, the dead money in the pot dictates your calling range.

Against the loosest range, call 33+/AJ+.

Against the medium range, call 22+/AQ+.

Against the tightest range, call 55+/AK+.

The problem with micro limits

This hand represents a common problem with micro limits.

I have 52o in the BB and flop bottom two. I reraise a LAG and 2 get callers behind me.

On a board of A52 rainbow I figure the board screams I'm coolered to a suited A5 or A2. Or perhaps someone is slow playing a set on a pretty dry board. This would make common sense right?

Nope.

Someone limped with AK. The other chasing a gutshot...

Gump has finally lost his mind

You might look at this hand and say 'OMG - WTF!'. And yet, if I knew my opponents exact hand this was about the only way I'm getting his stack. Villain is pretty ABC TAG and so am I.....usually.

Pure genius or donkeriffic?

There is indeed a very good explanation for this hand.

Bow down to the King

KK has cost me a bunch lately. It really has been bizarre and got me a little snakebit with this hand.

On Poker Academy I had:
- KK into AA. And not your typical preflop KK into AA type scenario. I limped from UTG, player behind me limps with AA, a LAG in late position raises, I reraise, player behind me with AA (that had limped behind) now pushes. Wow.
- KK into QQ. Allin preflop, busted to a set of course.

On Pokerstars::
- KK into AA. Somehow managed to dodge that bullet. They guy had been playing pretty tight and thanks to Bastin, a quick look at the Pokerlisting site labelled the guy a 'Shark'.
- KK into AQs. This one was a peach. Guy calls pot bets to river chasing the flush. With 50c left in his stack on the river, he gets there. :/

I'm only down about 1 buyin at Stars so not too bad after all.

Multiple levels of thinking

Sandman's recent post reminded me about this Sklansky concept. Most are familiar with it but I see a lot of people fall down when it comes to 'thinking one level above your opponent'.

If you start doing this, microstakes really isn't half as bad as some make out.

http://www.thepokerbank.com/multiple-level-thinking.html

What Does Multiple Level Thinking Mean To You?

Now that you know about each of the levels and how complicated the thought processes can become, what exactly can you use this kind of information for? The main reason as to why it is important to know about the different levels of thought is so that you can save yourself from playing incorrectly against different types of players. There is no point playing at level 3 if your opponent is playing at level 0, because there is no need to consider what your opponent thinks you have if they don’t even have any idea about what they are holding themselves. You will just be ‘over thinking’ the situation and wasting you time and effort.

Therefore to beat each type of player, you should always stick to thinking at one level above your opponents only. If you find that a player is only concerned about what they are holding and playing at level 1, you will be able to beat them by thinking about what they might be holding and playing at level 2. Therefore you should be able to bluff them successfully whereas they will not as they are not giving any thought to the strength of your hand. There is no need to make extravagant plays against a low level thinker because they will have no idea about what is taking place, which will make it more likely that your ‘advanced’ play will backfire.

So for every opponent you play against, simply play at the level above him or her and you should be able to employ a successful winning poker playing style against them. The higher the level of thought you can use effectively the better, but also be prepared to adapt depending on the level of your opponents. This applies to all levels from 0 and above.

Five little Omaha hands

After a little searching I discovered this site:

http://www.propokertools.com/simulator/omahaSimulationEditor.jsp

I really been struggling with the odds but I plan to review all key hands so eventually I'll have a better idea of my odds.

The first hand shows the importance of having four cards that work together and multiple draws. On the flop I figured I had the nuts and/or the villain was freerolling to a flush draw. When I saw the villains holding, I thought I was a small dog. The stats afterwards shocked me.

The second hand I figure Bastin planned to CR the flop. Would like to hear his comments though! Yet again, I actually thought my equity a little higher. Bastin actually caught me by surprise as I didn't notice him there until he bet the turn.

The third hand I misread the board on the river. I'm such a donk at this game!

The fourth hand just shows how much AA devalues after the flop. Out of position, I throw out a solid bet if the board looks safe, then I'm pretty much done with the hand.

And to the final hand, I flopped trips but I just don't like my hand out of position. Typically, I'm looking to check/call then hopefully fill up. The comment at the end was just to build the suspense. ;)

During current Omaha session you were dealt 59 hands and saw flop:
- 3 out of 7 times while in big blind (42%)
- 6 out of 6 times while in small blind (100%)
- 12 out of 46 times in other positions (26%)
- a total of 21 out of 59 (35%)
Pots won at showdown - 4 of 6 (66%)
Pots won without showdown - 0

Different path, same destination

Played few more hands tonight as the fish were biting. I have been finding relatively short/sharp sessions of around an hour or two are more productive.

I had some good seats with the soft spots to my right. I jumped out of the blocks with an over-set and won a few more nice pots, but then gave some back when a few flushes got there against me. I lost about a half buyin with flopped trips against a turned higher set, and I got outplayed when a player slow played a flopped flush and to hit runner runner 2 pair to pay off a river bet.

Otherwise, I still finished up a buyin but it was more volatile than previous sessions.

During current Hold'em session you were dealt 265 hands and saw flop:
- 15 out of 32 times while in big blind (46%)
- 5 out of 32 times while in small blind (15%)
- 20 out of 201 times in other positions (9%)
- a total of 40 out of 265 (15%)
Pots won at showdown - 6 of 14 (42%)
Pots won without showdown - 15

Steady as she goes

Another solid session. Finished up a buyin and a half over maybe 90 mins of play, four tabling. The showdowns are higher than normal as I was calling down some LAG's pretty light. Fortunately my radar was on tonight.

Yet again, I dumped 21 small blinds. When you think about it, it's only $2.10 at 25NL, or around 2 standard preflop raises. There's all sorts of pros and cons to doing this:

Cons
- for only a half bet I might flop a monster
- when i fold my SB in an unraised pot I'm flagging I'm a tight player

Pros
- the game becomes simpler as I'm getting into less ugly spots out of position
- i might actually flop a 2nd best monster. A not-so-rare example might be capping with 75s, getting a 772 flop then losing a big pot to someone with A7.

During current Hold'em session you were dealt 227 hands and saw flop:
- 15 out of 26 times while in big blind (57%)
- 4 out of 25 times while in small blind (16%)
- 23 out of 176 times in other positions (13%)
- a total of 42 out of 227 (18%)
Pots won at showdown - 8 of 9 (88%)
Pots won without showdown - 12

Coke in green glass bottles

I never cease to be amazed by the Internet. Tonight I stumbled across this little gem. Some clever person has animated parts of my favorite ever graphic novel, which coincidentally is also being made into a film next year. I just hope for the writers sake (and other Alan Moore fans) they don't dumb the movie down like they did for 'V for Vendetta'.

A few drips, a big drop

Here's my stats from a fairly typical session:

During current Hold'em session you were dealt 157 hands and saw flop:
- 12 out of 17 times while in big blind (70%)
- 1 out of 17 times while in small blind (5%)
- 10 out of 123 times in other positions (8%)
- a total of 23 out of 157 (14%)
Pots won at showdown - 6 of 6 (100%)
Pots won without showdown - 7

Fairly uneventful for the most part. I finished up maybe half a buyin. For the most part I was card dead and 14% is pretty low even for me. There is one stat that sticks out but is fairly standard for me. It's also one of the biggest changes I've made to my game this year.

The Preflop Police

It's funny how often I run into these guys. It's the one thing about poker that does get under my skin.

It just makes absolutely no sense to me to berate bad players? To me it shows a much greater fundamental misunderstanding of the game than the poor play from a donkey.

Someday I'll have money

There was a bunch of great song links flying around on PAO tonight. For some reason, this song was permanently etched on my brain way back when I was a hatchling. When I find myself card dead at the table, this is often the song I start humming.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6h82fq5YHZM

I warn you, the harp riff will get lodged in your brain and drive you a bit loopy like yours truly.

Not a whole lot of poker to report. I discovered that 'Timmy' had a 1000 or so lazy pax sitting around, so I've been terrorizing the heads up rooms. I do really enjoy HU and I think I might play quite a few games on PAO as well as getting Moshmans new book.

Across the Universe Part II

I went to this concert a year or two ago at the Sydney Opera House. It was 'Music Through the Ages', starting with classical then progressing right through to Radiohead and Queen. As you can tell I'm a big music buff and snapped up tickets quickly.

The Opera House is an amazing venue for live music. It was architecturally designed for the best acoustics and the result is all the instruments have clarity without sounding the least bit muddy. You might think the 'shell' design looks a little odd but it was done for a reason, not just for a tourist attraction! Backing the vocalist was the Australian Chamber Orchestra, just supremely talented musicians.

And the vocalist was Katie Noonan. I first discovered her in an alt/indie rock band which quickly became my favourite Aussie band, but as you can tell she's also classically trained. Every note was pure and perfect. I've never heard anything like it before.

Now step inside the Opera House:

There's only so many tough folds you can make

My luck seems to oscillate between scarily good and bizarrely bad. Every time I sit down for a session, I either win pot after pot and feel invincible, or I get caught in a storm of really tough situations, bad beats and eventual tilt.

Today was yet another session which ran horrible from the first hand. Straight up I was in a tough spot with AK out of position. Then I found myself laying down overpairs against tight players. I was flopping two pair on flushed boards and trying to figure if i was good.

Eventually, this hand was the final nail so I called an end to the torture. Villain is a tight aggressive regular and Pokerlisting describes him as a shark. I got outplayed in this hand and milked like a bloated jersey.

Stacking off light

I've been playing 25NL some time now and I'm still shocked by what some people are willing to stack off with. I had a hand recently where a regular grinder accused me of slow rolling him. Basically the action went:

- I limp with 88
- a tight aggressive grinder behind me raises
- both loose players at the table call
-I make the easy call, spike my set, throw out a hefty bet and the TAG insta-shoves!
- Gump falls off his chair

Maybe I'm over-reading the situation, but to me it appeared one of us just got coolered. I thought it was VERY likely he had 99 and a little less likely 33. The snap shove with a big overpair didn't make sense? So I thought for a little while, clicked 'call' and he rolls over KK.

"Nice slow roll buddy".

To which I reply "I didn't peg you as someone to stack off with one pair"

Here are the fun hands from last night. There is a little bit of acting that goes along with the AA limp. First pass I usually call very quickly so it appears i have a drawing hand and want to see a flop. Hopefully when the action gets back around and someone has raised, I run the clock a little then throw out an oversize bet to make it appear I have a pair and want to collect the dead money. I see LAG's make this play quite a bit and it's really not that bad an option.

You'd be surprised how often I get called or re-shoved.

Or run into Bastin with my KK limp vs his AA. :/

Clash of the Titans

And so the two great stags stumbled out of the thickets and faced off in the open field. Both standing their ground firmly and snorting at each other in contempt. Then in an instant they rumbled across the field charging headlong toward each other at great velocity.

Who would concede? Who would blink first? Who would emerge the victor?

And on the Sabbath, they said unto Forrest

.
On Saturday, I played a pretty solid session of over 1000 hands. For all that hard work, I finished down a little over a buyin. It was one of those days where I felt out of synch. I kept making the wrong decisions, folding the winning hand and calling down the worst hands. I found myself contemplating today that maybe Holdem really has dried up? Maybe all the donks are finally learning how to play? Maybe it's time to move onto Omaha or another game?

And tonight, I would like to thank for Poker Gods for their firm reply:

Gump's Top 3 Music Videos

#1. Aphex Twin - Come to Daddy

I still remember the first time I saw this. I came home late with my girlfriends and we were unwinding watching a late night music video show. When it was finished, we both looked at each other stunned and said "What the hell was that?!". Very, very disturbing yet hard to turn away from.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Az_7U0-cK0

#2. Laibach - Across the Universe

I wasn't aware this was a Beatles cover when i first saw this. I thought it was just an amazing song with beautiful imagery - each scene like a painting coming to life. I think I may have also had a small crush on the singer. Make sure you watch right until the end...

#3 Unkle - Rabbit in your Headlights

Similar to Aphex Twin, this is like watching a car crash - literally! Disturbing and yet fascinating.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3ClCwcCvdQ

..and an honorable mention!

Roger Glover - Love Is All (The Butterfly Ball)

This song is one of my earliest memories. It was a filler song on the ABC in between the afternoon children's programming. Whatever the director was on was pretty serious stuff!

Of Mice and Men

Tonight was my first venture back to live tournament play via a local pub tournament. Returning after a lay off for quite some time, I'd set out a plan to reveal the new Tournament Gump MkII.

Inspired by Gus' amazing book, the plan was basically as follows:
- open raise with any ace
- open raise any unraised pot in late position with almost any two
- bet if i hit any part of a flop
- try to play every pot in position and always be the player betting
- attack any weakness
- build an image where my raises were not given any respect
- build enough of a stack I can take some hits
- get my chips in bad and inflict some beats etc etc

If you've seen Gus play or read the book, you get the idea.

And the verdict?

After the first few levels, I was the chip leader in the 60 player tournament. I'd quickly built a stack of over ~14K with the blinds still at 100/200. I hit some cards but won some pots from behind when priced in. In one pot I raised yet another pot this time with A rag suited. Another player pushed out of frustration and I was getting 2 to 1. Now for the fun part...

I have chips and I can afford to gamble and lose. I'm getting the right price against a pair. I might be in front if the push was out of frustration. Even if dominated, I'm almost getting the right price.

"I call"

He flips 88. I hit my ace and everyone looks at me like I'm an ace-any donk. Excellent! :)

As the tournament progressed I built my chip stack from a starting stack 1500 to almost 20K. I was well aware though that to win these things, I need to get cards at the business end. I wish I could say there was a happy ending but it wasn't to be. I got card dead as the blinds escalated and found myself quickly dropping back to the pack. Then came the one-two punch:

The Jab: I'm in the SB, blinds are 1K/2K and it's folded around. I look down at 88 and I push my ~12K into the middle. The BB was super tight but aware of my image and I had pushed her off better hands in the past. She called with K5 and hit runner runner straight with the 5.

The Knockout punch: Next hand it's folded to me on the button. I have 7K left and look down to KTo. I'm not sure of the math with 2 players to act, but to me its a easy push. The BB calls with an ace and I'm gone with about 12 players left.

That's tournament poker folks.

Walking home with Anna Kournikova

Ace King. One of the most misplayed Holdem hands.

Early in my poker life I loved this hand. How hard can it be? It's a drawing hand. Hopefully you flop a pair and win a nice pot of someone with a dominated hand? And of course, you can continuation bet and either take down the pot or still hit a better pair. As long as your don't get tied to one pair it's a great hand.

Lately its a hand i hate with a passion. I'm not exaggerating when I say out of roughly the last 40-50 odd times I had AK, I've hit a pair 3 times. I am serious.

Of those three times, the following has gone down.
Hand1: I pay off a LAG with 2 pair
Hand2: I pay off a LAG with 2 pair
Hand3: I move allin with 2 pair against a maniac. He calls with a bad ace we get runner runner for a split pot. I lose a few bucks in rake.

I do hate to think how much AK has cost me this last month or so.

Monkey Magic

Just a quick report.

I'm on one hell of a downturn these last few weeks. From my high point it's currently around 8 buyins which does bite pretty hard. The frustrating part is a trend where my hand holds up in the smaller pots and every big pot I get snapped off by a 2 or 3 outer. :/

On another front, I've been reading up on Buddhist beliefs and philosophies and finding so much of it resonates with me. The funny thing is, I was introduced to much of this as a child as I sat glued to the TV watching my favourite afternoon series 'Monkey Magic'. Many of the shows centered around Buddhist morals and themes....mixed in of course with some kung fu fighting and cloud surfing. :)

The greatest achievement is selflessness. The greatest worth is self-mastery. The greatest quality is seeking to serve others. The greatest precept is continual awareness. The greatest medicine is the emptiness of everything. The greatest action is not conforming with the worlds ways. The greatest magic is transmuting the passions. The greatest generosity is non-attachment. The greatest goodness is a peaceful mind. The greatest patience is humility. The greatest effort is not concerned with results. The greatest meditation is a mind that lets go. The greatest wisdom is seeing through appearances. - Atisha

Swiss Army Knife

If you haven't checked it out already, there's a brilliant forum on the Pokerroad site where the pro's can freely discuss hands.

This thread in particular has so much poker knowledge wrapped up in it:

http://www.pokerroad.com/forums/showthread.php?t=743&page=2

The one thing that stands out in these discussions is a distinct lack of any math. They talk about similar situations that have occurred, what their opponent is thinking and why they might act a certain way. There are so many factors and unknowns that go into determining someones hand range I do wonder firstly how accurate the post hand math analysis can be and secondly, how you can begin to apply this while in a live hand?

I believe most live pros certainly know the fundamental poker math inside out, but would rarely delve much deeper into this area. But on their side is a wide array of tools that many online pros don't yet have at their disposal.

Ready, set....UGH!

This week has been a bit of a rollercoaster online. I've been up a few buyins, downs a few, then up a few, then down again....over and over. The trick of course would be if I could cut out the bad sessions I'd end up with a very solid week! Over the course of time, I have noticed some patterns which might help me avoid these losses appearing on the ledger.

Bad Session

1. LAG's to the left
Almost every 'bad' session I play involves having a LAG or two sitting behind. I usually find myself torn between staying/leaving because while I'm happy to find a table with a spot, but I really don't like my position. I recall Spambot saying once that having a LAG to your left is great because you always get to act last. But that theory doesn't seem to be working for me....I hate playing big pots or calling down light out of position, and drawing while out of position against a LAG is just plain messy.

2. Starting on the wrong foot
When I first sit and fire up a few tables, my preference is to ease into things then gradually start getting into some pots. Bad sessions usually begin with a whole series of tricky situations and often my showdown % is running at 1 from 5. It's almost like being caught at sea in a storm when each table keeps throwing really tough decisions at you. You have JJ on a dry board and two people shove. You have 2 pair on an all club board and first to act. You value bet TPTK and a LAG shove on the river. In no time I feel frazzled and start bashing the keyboard which typically is a bad sign...

And so the resolution is, I plan to avoid both situations over the coming weeks and hopefully this will improve my bottom line.

The Grinder Uniform

Cardgrrl mentioned in a recent blog topic about the number of poker players wearing black baseball caps. This is a topic I've been thinking about recently also.

I typically wear jeans and a hoody because i want to be comfortable and the casino aircon is often set to 'arctic'. But it occurred to me a while ago that I'm giving away free info, esp. on a Fri/Sat night. The only people there dressed down are the grinders. They're not there to see a show or play an hour or two before hitting the town.

When I first sit typically the only information available is the person appearance. You see those dressed up prior to a night on the town, you see 'suits' winding down after a tough week, you see the tourists in the gawdy over-priced shirts and caps, and then there are the regulars sitting there in jeans and a hoody quietly riffling their chips. Without any read on their betting patterns would you play each differently?

In a game which involves a good deal of deception, should we immediately throw up a red flag to the observant players at the table that we know what we're doing? If you sat down and raised half your stack with AA first hand, would you get more action wearing a 'I heart Sydney' shirt?

Next trip, I thought I might dress up and wear a collared shirt with a nice watch etc. It will be interesting to see if perceptions are any different.

Moving up to 50NL

I've been entrenched in 25NL for some time now, basically for two main reasons:
1. I'm very comfortable losing $25 a throw or perhaps $100 if I'm on a downturn. At this level the money doesn't affect my decision making. At 50NL, sometimes losing $50 (or more during a bad patch) stings a little too much.
2. Every time I've set myself to move up I've run really badly. I really think you need a little momentum when you move up a level and each time I've tried I've gotten snapped off by a horrible beat or a cooler.

Tonight was a welcome change. After a frustrating night breaking even at my usual haunt I thought I'd play a round or two at 50NL. These are actually the first 3 hands I'm dealt as soon as I sit down.

(In the 3rd hand, I typically wouldn't push 1 pair that hard but I'd been railing for a few hands and the villain was pretty clueless. In fact, when he left the table immediately broke.)
