Pot control out of position

Here's a fairly common ugly spot. I have an over pair, out of position against a loose aggressive player.

Raised preflop. Snap call.
Bet the flop. Snap call.

Now what? I don't particularly want to build a big pot out of position with only one pair.

One of the best pieces of advice I've picked up from listening to podcasts was Gavin Smith saying "Always bet the turn, check the river", not vice versa. The reasoning was:
- you're continuing the control the hand
- checking the river can induce all kinds of bluffs
- by checking the river you've kept the pot small and can now call most bets/bluffs
